Verushka – Holding On (TS Premiere)

Verushka‘s latest song, ‘Holding On’, is a heartfelt meditation on perseverance that arises from the mysterious calm of isolation and the misery of heartbreak. Her warm yet powerful voice draws you in from the start, conveying both vulnerability and strength in equal measure. The song starts with a modest, slow-burning groove before gradually evolving into a rich and diverse soundscape. Jazz-tinged chords, earthy tones, and soothing rhythms blend to create an atmosphere that feels both personal and universal.

Holding On is appealing because of its honesty. Verushka doesn’t simply sing about emotional paralysis; she lives it, transforming the daily facts of existence in isolation into lyrical bits of communal experience. The bear dressing robe she mentions in the video represents both vulnerability and fun, providing lightness amongst the weight of dread. This blend of sorrow and fun allows the track to touch on a deeper level of intimacy.

Verushka was born in Somerset to a Croatian mother and a British father. She was surrounded by music from a young age, with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Stevie Wonder, operas, and jazz playing in her house. These songs helped shape her voice for the future. As a kid, she moved to Oxford and then settled in south London, where she absorbed the city’s restless soundscape: church-steps soul, late-night jazz clubs, and London’s electronic edge.

Her debut album ‘Not Even Bliss’ spans genres, from neo-soul and jazz to Latin inflexions and electronic textures, with string sections, horn flourishes, and lush orchestration. Verushka’s writing is intensely personal, dealing with self-doubt, world weariness, and the power of little, sensitive moments. Her voice—warm, expressive, and almost confessional—anchors each track, making everything she sings feel true to herself.

Enjoy the single below and look out for more brilliance from Verushka in the near future!
