The single ‘Plains’ by Brooklyn-based instrumentalist and composer Malini Sridharan is a definite example of a composition that masterfully uses layers upon layers of instruments topped off with soothing vocals—all mashing together to deliver a heavenly masterpiece.
From the get-go, the classic influences of Malini’s style are immediately observed as they harmonise with more contemporary musical styles that lean more toward the pop sphere.
Telling a tale of death, Malini’s exposure to Indian classical music and medieval music from her parents has allowed her to tell a musical journey that is both emotionally charged and instrumentally sound.
Boldly integrating uncommon styles into her upcoming album, ‘Tombeaux’, which includes Plains, Malini has incorporated the use of a variety of instruments such as the sitar, vibraphone, horns, strings, piano, and woodwinds. All of these work together in perfect sync thanks to the guidance of producer Julia Holter.
All in all, Plains is undoubtedly a sombre yet powerful and emotionally impressive piece that successfully communicates its message to its listeners with elegance and ease.
