It’s been a while since we last heard from London trio St. Barbe and their expansive sound world. The band comprises James Maltby (guitar/compositions), Edwin Ireland (bass guitar), and Floyer Sydenham (drums).
The band made their debut in 2021 with ‘Shapeless’, a self-produced and independently-released three-track E.P, and today we are thrilled to premiere their new song ‘Noumena’.
A fusion of jazz, electronica, and world music, ‘Noumena’ is anchored by a sampled kick pattern intertwined with grooves from the Moroccan Gnawa tradition. It concludes with a rock-infused outro reminiscent of their debut E.P.
The trio’s music thrives in that beautiful space where genres blur. It’s a confident single release that shows off their impossible-to-pin-down sound to the full. Fans of Avishai Cohen, Lionel Loueke and Donny McCaslin take note; It’s intricate and experimental yet still familiar in a way.
Hear the song before anyone else, and make sure you head to St. Barbe’s Soundcloud and check out their other tracks; you won’t be disappointed.
