Johannesburg multi-instrumentalist Malcolm Jiyane has shared details of his debut album, titled UMDALI.
Marking his debut as a leader, the album is preceded by lead single, Umkhumbi kaMa, which you can listen to below. The record follows his contribution to last year’s SPAZA LP, UPRIZE!
UMDALI is, as the press release explains, “an honest snapshot of his personal circumstances at the time of recording. In that period several years ago, Jiyane was dealing with the death of a band member, the birth of a daughter and the passing of his beloved mentor Johnny Mekoa, founder of the Music Academy of Gauteng, which Jiyane attended from a young age.”
In creating the album, Jiyane draws on many musical friendships he’s formed over the years, including bassist Ayanda Zalekile, drummer Lungile Kunene, percussionist Gontse Makhene, pianist Nkosinathi Mathunjwa, saxophonist Nhlanhla Mahlangu and trumpeters Brandon Ruiters and Tebogo Seitei.
Listen as mellow alto sax and trombone blend with seductive trumpet notes, subtle keys and percussive elements; to create a fusion of jazz-funk that recalls Herbie Hancock.
Mushroom Hour Half Hour will release UMDALI on 12th November. Pre-order here.
