New Sounds: Clever Austin – NUNU

New mixtape from Clever Austin.

Hiatus Kaiyote drummer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Clever Austin caused quite a stir with the genre-bending sounds of his debut album Pareidolia, and today, he’s back with the ear-catching NUNU mixtape.

The new mixtape explores profound, meditative ideas dedicated to the joy found in learning new instruments (Side A, guitar/Side B, piano). Throughout its existence, you’ll hear shades of soul, ambient and classical slowly unravelling, keeping you on edge at all times.

About his new mixtape, he explains: “When I first learn to play an instrument I can find it really satisfying and meditative to just play something over and over again”.

NUNU draws on influences from around the world including South Indian classical musician, Mehdi Hasaan, American jazz pianist, Bill Evans, French composer, Eric Satay, and more.

“It’s all about understanding the sonic range of an instrument which can eventually result in a ‘Pareidolia’ type project, where I’m putting all my experiences of learning singular instruments into one greater whole.”

We’ve got NUNU on heavy rotation; hopefully, you will too!

NUNU is out now via Touching Bass. Buy from Bandcamp or Juno.
