The Leftovers

Treat your taste buds to these mouthwatering leftovers!

Good music is dropping daily, and it’s easy to miss some good stuff. That’s why every week, we sift through the emails, blogs, and streaming services to pull out five gems worth your time and make sure the good stuff doesn’t slip by unnoticed. This week: Jeff Parker, Rory Green, Allexa Nava and more. Dig in and enjoy

In celebration of John Coltrane‘s 100th birthday last week, guitarist Jeff Parker released a cover of Coltrane’s classic composition ‘Miles Mode‘, made in collaboration with Chris Speed (tenor saxophone), Kaveh Rastegar (electric bass), and Aaron Steele (drums). Parker says: “John Coltrane has been a steady muse for me ever since I started to study his music at a young age. It’s an honour to pay tribute to him on the occasion of his centennial with three of my favourite musicians from the Los Angeles music community.” Check out the brilliant cover below!

Speaking of Jeff Parker, his ETA IVtet cohort Anna Butterss recently shared ‘Ninths‘ is a bonus cut from her Mighty Vertebrate album sessions, previously only found on the Japanese CD. Gregory Uhlmann‘s gritty, postโ€‘punkโ€‘leaning guitar sets the pace before Ben Lumsdaine‘s woozy, polyrhythmic drums pull everything into motion. Josh Johnson‘s alto sax carries a synthโ€‘like lead while drones and chirps flicker at the edges. This lovely hidden gem from Butterss is well worth discovering.

More love for Anna Butterss! This release finds Anna teaming up with the equally talented John Raymond and Ben Lumsdaine for a collaborative album titled Beginningless. Recorded live over two days in Los Angeles, Beginningless finds the trio expanding the trumpet-bass-drums format through shared intuition, fluid textures, and patient, elastic interplay. To announce the album, they shared the immersive title track. Take a listen now.

Consider yourself introduced to Rory Green and his enchanting debut single ‘Moments Brighter Than The Sun‘. The Ghana-born, Manchester-based guitarist, composer and bandleader has spent the past few years establishing himself as a distinctive new voice in the UK’s contemporary jazz scene, drawing attention for his guitar playing and supporting the likes of Laura Misch and Mansur Brown. Now gearing up to release his debut album via Matthew Halsall‘s ever-brilliant Gondwana Records, you can check out the title track, which coincidentally features Halsall on flute. On the album’s title track, Green says: “Moments Brighter Than The Sun is something I had in my mind for years with this intention; the title itself was to serve as a reminder to myself to sometimes lift my head up and observe what’s around me.” He describes it as “a sonic landscape where I can really go to and reflect. For me, it’s become a way for me to be able to reset when I find myself getting too caught up in the smaller details in life and sometimes need to be able to take a step back and observe the bigger picture.” Listen below and look out for the album, which is set to be released on November 20th.

We told you last year that Allexa Nava (see here) has a unique sound, and we were craving more. Well, last week, the London-based Peruvian saxophonist, flautist and composer blessed us with her new EP, ‘To Nostalgia & Explorations’. We’re pleased to say the new project does not disappoint. The EP features three compelling tracks that showcase Nava’s unique musical identity. The opening piece, ‘Talks About Nostalgia‘, draws on Mรบsica Criolla and Afro-Peruvian influences, reflecting her cultural background through rich melodies. Next up is ‘Intermezzo ‘, which takes a darker turn, using experimental textures to create a sense of foreboding that hints at something cataclysmic. The final track, ‘Talks About Explorations‘, balances adventurousness with structure. It’s just as brilliant as her debut EP, so be sure to check it out below!
