This month’s instalment of Twistedsoul presents… offers up a fantastic selection from Raúl Monsalve.
The Venezuelan-born, Paris-based bandleader behind Raúl Monsalve y Los Forajidos, is a bassist, composer and cultural explorer channelling the rich rhythmic traditions of his homeland into a boldly contemporary sound. Rooted in the Afro-Venezuelan music he absorbed growing up in Caracas, Monsalve weaves together spiritual jazz, psychedelic funk, Afrobeat and experimental electronics to create music that feels both deeply ancestral and forward-facing. Following the global acclaim of their debut album Bichos, his latest project SOL sees Monsalve expanding his sonic universe even further—collaborating with an international cast of musicians while exploring themes of rebirth, resilience and cultural identity. Now working between Paris, London and the wider diaspora, he continues to build a vibrant, boundary-pushing musical language that connects past and future in equal measure.
