We’re excited to welcome Kiiōtō to Twistedsoul with a guest playlist.
The duo consisting of singer/songwriter Lou Rhodes and songwriter and pianist Rohan Heath has just released their second album, ‘Black Salt’. A project that casts the net wide and deep in the tales it tells. Throughout, the arrangements remain spare and bold, leaning into jazz, broken beat and soul textures, with references as diverse as Carole King, Khruangbin and Alice Coltrane.
Written primarily in Kiiōtō’s home studio in North London, Black Salt features guest appearances from a melting pot of musicians, notably guitarist Hawi Gondwe (Amy Winehouse), double-bassist Andy Hamill (4 Hero, Carleen Anderson), drummer Mykey Wilson (Corrine Bailey Rae), and even some impromptu guitar by the one and only David Arnold.
True to their own genre-fluid, detail‑rich sound, the duo pull together a selection where Bill Evans’ quiet lyricism sits comfortably alongside the soul of Minnie Riperton, the devotional beauty of Alice Coltrane, and the shape‑shifting grooves of SAULT. Add gems from Aja Monet, Celo Sol, and a handful of other inspired picks, and you get a playlist that is both deeply considered and beautifully intuitive.
To share more about their playlist, here’s what they had to say:
“It’s a pretty random selection, but that’s the world of Kiiōtō. There are evergreens like Alice Coltrane’s ‘Blue Nile’ and Minnie Ripperton’s ‘Les Fleurs’, mixed up with bruk beats from Oliver Night. Cleo Sol’s ‘Airplane’ struck a deep chord with us in the early days of making BLACK SALT and remains a ‘go to’ for blissing out in stiller moments. Bill Evans’ Piece Peace, which closes the set, was in many ways the track that started the whole journey that brought us here.”
Press play and enjoy.
