Treat your taste buds to these mouthwatering leftovers!
We try to share everything, but gems slip through the cracks. The Leftovers fixes that (a little): every Friday, we dig through the emails and drop five releases in bite-sized pieces we couldn’t ignore. This week brings new finds from Bel Cobain, ZENA, Seretan, and more. Dig in and savour the finds.
Fabiano do Nascimento’s everโflowing river of ideas continues with the upcoming release of new album, Vila. For the collaborative project, he reunites with Vittor Santos and his sixteen-piece orchestra. If you’ve not heard their 2023 album, Lendas (see review here) with the legendary Arthur Verocai, you’re in for a treat. Remarkably, Vilaย marks his third release in as many months, arriving on the heels of November’s Cavejazย and last month’sย Aquรกticos. Opening the door to the album are two pieces: the shimmering ‘Spring Theme’ and the vibrant ‘O Tempo (Foi O Meu Mestre)’. Both are below for waiting for your ears.
For those of you who have followed TS for a while, you already know that we are huge fans of Gilles Peterson’s Brownwood Recordings label. A hub for eclectic genre-defying music, they continue to introduce some of the most distinctive voices in jazz, soul and electronic music to the world. So, step forward, ZENA, the contemporary ethio-jazz duo from London, comprised of producer, keyboardist and synth player Yohan Kebede and bassist/producer Menelik. Set for release on March 20th, their debut EP, ‘TEMESGEN’ is described as “a six-track aural odyssey that balances uncompromising experimentation with a deep sense of home, comfort, and exploration.” Track two from the project, ‘MY LOVE YOUR LOVE,’ is the first enveloping, spellbinding cut to emerge, and it needs your attention.
Staying with the Brownswood camp, we have the return of Bel Cobain. Known for her striking voice and songwriting skills, Cobain has been capturing hearts for many years. The East London singer releases the powerful new single ‘Am I Dumb’ as her first offering to the label. An emotionally charged track, the song delves into Cobain’s internal struggle with self-blame and fractured perception. Her powerful vocals soar over a driving, percussive instrumental filled with eerie textures. Lyrically, it explores the toxic cycle of leaving, learning, and returning. Enjoy the song below, it’s a belter!
International Anthem keep bringing the goods, and we keep lapping them up. Macie Stewart, Whitney Johnson, and Lia Kohl compose compositions that alternately feel tranquil and disquieting using string instruments, voices, and manual tape effects. Each is deeply rooted in sound exploration, multidisciplinary composition, and cross-genre collaboration. Across the spectrum of experimental avant-garde, electronic, indie rock, and DIY darlings, they have recorded and performed solo. The talented trio will release their collaborative album, BODY SOUND, on March 20th. The album’s opener, ‘dawn | pulse’, is below. Lend your ears to it and get enveloped in its spellbinding beauty.
Running Clouds condenses Seretan’s electronic language into a tight set of textural miniatures. Minimal synth phrases, ambient shading and faint rhythmic traces circle small motifs that shift through careful processing and tonal nuance. Built from analogueโdigital hybrids and patient modulation, the EP focuses on timbre and structure rather than genre cues. The result is a precise, quietly absorbing study in controlled motion. And with just five tracks and a total playing time of 24 minutes, it never outstays its welcome.
