The Leftovers

Treat your taste buds to these mouthwatering leftovers!

Trying to keep up with the daily deluge of music is like trying to drink from a firehose. While we do our best to share all the good music that comes our way, some gems inevitably slip through the cracks. That’s where The Leftovers features come in; each Friday, we serve up five tasty morsels that we couldn’t let slip away into easily digestible snippets. This week, we’re showcasing new music from Zach Tenorio, Rbsn, KAU and more. Lap up these delectable treats.

Keeping an open mind about albums you initially dismiss as probably “not my thing” can really pay off. The lead single, ‘What It Takes’ by Zach Tenorio, didn’t exactly hook me and sort of just floated by unnoticed. After spending some time with his new album, I’ve realised it’s totally my thing. Tenorio’s Field Trip is a 30-minute whirlwind from the LA-based keyboard polymath. Twenty-one miniature ideas sliding between prog flair, beat-scene swing, Hermeto Pascoal-style mischief and chopped vocal sketches. Wild, bright, and full of life. Field Trip is well worth 30 minutes or so of your attention.

Some jazz ear candy comes our way from James Allsopp Group’s Stars And Sand. The new album is a vivid, expansive statement from one of the UK’s most individual sax voices. Free-jazz fire meets ambient colour and dubwise textures, with a killer band shaping music that feels cinematic and deeply personal. Infused with Dolphy, Coltrane and Sun Ra vibes, this album offers an innovative twist that will delight those (like me) in perpetual pursuit of fresh jazz.

Rome-based singer-songwriter Rbsn blends soul, folk, psych-rock and Mediterranean colour into an intimate, cinematic record about belonging, communication, love and renewal. Rbsn, a masterful guitarist, reigns supreme with a voice that’s unbelievably soulful, powerful, and clear. Listen to his new album, entitled ‘Here’, below.

A contemplative, heart-pulling cut from vocalist Nkechi Anele and arranger/multi-instrumentalist Nic Ryan-Glenie aka Owelu Dreamhouse. The duo blends cinematic soul, psychedelia, and Afrobeat, weaving a meditation on letting go, inspired by the Niger Delta’s flow. Listen below.

Unknown Waveformsย by KAU is a jamโ€‘born session of jazz, hip hop, and electronic grooves โ€” playful, raw, and delightfully imperfect. The Brussels trio (Andre Breidlid on drums, Matteo Genovese on bass, Jan Janzen on keys) cook up tracks that feel like they were caught midโ€‘conversation: sometimes funky, sometimes dreamy, always filled with analog warmth. Seventeen tracks that care less about perfection and more about vibe.
