Guest Playlist: Elijah Minnelli

Our latest guest playlist comes courtesy of dub musician Elijah Minnelli.

While he’s famous for his musical talents, back in the fictional Breadminster, he’s a steadfast fixture of the bottom rung of the County Council ladder.

Minnelli’s ‘Clams As A Main Meal‘ is the dub album nobody asked for but everyone desperately needs. Funded by the council’s misallocated budget and blessed by a fake doctor in a moon costume, his latest off-kilter endeavour features dub legend Dennis Bovell and Welsh-language singer Carwyn Ellis.

Track titles like ‘Watercraft Apologist’ and ‘Bomb The Green Belt’ suggest a sense of fun behind his unusual creations. His reggae, cumbia, and folk experiments all work brilliantly—tactile, playful, and satisfyingly bizarre. It’s what happens when bureaucratic incompetence meets genuine talent. The result? Genius music that’s racked up millions of streams while simultaneously disappointing an entire imaginary township.

As the album slowly slips into many ears, we asked Elijah to curate a playlist and, although he was busy with Council mischief, he took some time out to put together a sublime selection for us, opening a window into his musical influences, mostly from his childhood and teenage years.

Without further ado, over to Elijah!

Influences are tricky, but I’ve gone for formative tracks, mostly from childhood and my teenage years. I’m not trying to be particularly “headsy” either. These are hits and anthems, lots of them; some maybe only to me on a more insular, family basis, but they’re not new discoveries. That would be a different playlist.

Genre-wise, my influences are fairly wide-ranging: from hardcore punk to folk, from Wiley to Yiddish music, with reggae, ska and calypso at the core. Things will inevitably be left out, and I’m also hugely influenced by the good work of my friends as DJs, standing in clubs and hearing them play wonderful music. So an additional shout out to k means, Dome Zero, i-sha, sinny and Heavy Petal, to name but a few.
