Phi-Psonics returns with Expanding to One, a powerful third album recorded live in Pasadena and led by bassist Seth Ford-Young. Released via Gondwana Records, this 14-track project leans into spiritual jazz with an improvisational core, weaving warmth, intimacy, and community into every note. The ensemble expanded with 11 guest musicians and crafted a rich soundscape that’s grounded yet exploratory.

‘There’s Still Hope’ sets the tone with its twin tenor saxophones gently sparring over a mellow rhythm, delivering a mood that’s uplifting and open. In contrast, ‘Discovery’ stretches out into freer territory, quoting Coltrane’s A Love Supreme and building into a swirling, meditative climax. The group’s chemistry is palpable, driven by attentive listening and a shared spiritual intention.
Not every track reaches the same high; ‘Before the Pyramids’ feels underdeveloped, but overall, the live energy and communal atmosphere shine through. With elements like Wurlitzer pianos, flutes, pedal steel, and harp, the album feels lush yet grounded. Expanding to One is a sincere and resonant offering, ideal for listeners craving depth, improvisation, and sonic healing.
