Jazz saxophonist Nicole McCabe will release her album A Song to Sing on March 7th via Colorfield Records. The album has 11 tracks, each representing McCabe’s unique jazz style.
If you’re new to McCabe, she is a composer, saxophonist, and educator from California who mainly contributes to jazz, alternative, and modern genres. She debuted in 2020 with “Introducing Nicole McCabe” and has worked with the likes of Ari Hoenig, Spencer Zahn, Dave Harrington, and Amy Aileen Wood, to name a few.
Her upcoming album focuses on jazz, electronic, and improvisational styles, mixing percussion, bass, synth piano, clarinet and saxophone to create a contemporary harmony.
Each track on the LP holds McCabe’s eccentric creativity in expressing art through music. The album largely accompanies the smooth saxophone sounds with steady percussive beats that strike nostalgia, evoking a sense of memory and familiarity.
The LP opens with “Running Backwards”, a short but sweet symphony that indulges in unsteady percussion rhythms, synth sounds and the smooth melody of McCabe’s saxophone in the background. The whole track is a steady harmony of various instruments that work together to create a relaxed and laid-back ambience but also make the listeners feel like they’re at the climax of a classic spy movie. The track fades with the slow belting of McCabe’s saxophone and dimming drum beats.
Check out the premiere of “Running Backwards” below, and look out for A Song to Sing next month.
