Traveling Through A Murky Wonderland With ‘Dregs’ By Dregs

The self-titled album of the elusive Melbourne/Naarm collective Dregs is a perfect example of music being used as a tool to invoke visual imagery to its listeners. When listening to Dregs, one can almost visualize traversing through a dreamy and ambient landscape, only to be yanked out of this soothing imagery to be riddled with a more chaotic auditory presence.

Treating listeners to a sensory overload that is equally mystical as it is heavy in nature, Dregs is an album that is best for people who are looking to refresh their musical palate with a style that is different but excellent in its own right.

The songs in the album can only be described as imbuing a feeling of uneasiness or discomfort, shaking one’s mindset to its core with an unsettling composition that retains its tightness and musical intricacy despite the apparent chaos that it tries to emanate.

‘Sofj’, the first song in the album, is an excellent introduction to Dregs with its sombre vibe accompanied by layers upon layers of melodies and rhythms that brandish a creepy atmosphere that is near addicting.

The aptly named song ‘Uneasy’ is another track in the album that is another perfect example of Dregs’ ability to create an eerie atmosphere which, ironically enough, pulls one in even further into the abyss. ‘Keyed’ is also another song in the album which is filled to the brim with a mystical aura — showing off siren-like sounds that lull listeners into its dark embrace.

Dregs is a grim library of songs that are all worth listening to for hours on end. The trip-hop adjacent collection of tracks in Dregs flows seamlessly with each other — pulling listeners into an enchanting sonic wonderland.
