‘Returning, Dream’ is a bold and daring endeavour by talented instrumentalist Jack Wyllie, who is also known for his work with Portico Quartet and Szun Waves.

Released under Wyllie’s project, Paradise Cinema, the album is an experimental move by the musician – inspired by the mind-boggling Many-Worlds theory of quantum mechanics, which suggests that there are many different worlds that branch off from our own. Over the course of the album, Wylie explores multiple realities and parallel universes, which are translated into a musical narrative. The different musical layers emerge as a singular entity despite the unique and distinct styles contained within.

Wyllie creatively draws upon jazz, electronic, fourth world, and non-Western music. While a lot is going on with ‘Returning, Dream,’ the output successfully captures the essence and intent of Paradise Cinema.

Amidst the chaotic mix of instruments and layers tightly packed into each track in the album, one will find Wyllie’s raw creativity and skill as a composer and musician. Finding equilibrium in complex musical layers is no easy feat, but it is one that Wyllie can capture in ‘Returning, Dream’.

Inspired by artists such as Jon Hassell, Terry Riley, Don Cherry, and Midori Takada, ‘Returning Dream’ combines Wyllie’s experiences and musical insights. Songs such as ” A Morning in the Near Future” and “Python” are examples of Wyllie’s masterful composition and knack for creating a beautiful sonic atmosphere.

Other praiseworthy tracks in the album include the eerie and mystical track “Nowhere, Home”, the ecstatic melodies in full display in the song “Tide”, and the chaotic conclusion to the album, “End, Setting”.

Wyllie and Paradise Cinema’s work in ‘Returning, Dream’ is a fantastic and thought-provoking collection of tracks that blur the boundaries of conventional music. In doing so, it unravels a unique and compelling beauty that will be a joy to listen to for ages.
