Moonfish – Leaving (TS Premiere)

Riccardo Chiaberta and Maria Chiara Argiro, two of the supernovae of the London contemporary jazz and electronic music scene, unveil “Leaving.” The song is lifted from their upcoming EP of the same name, which will be out next Friday via Cavalo Records.

Their collective endeavour as a duo is named Moonfish, and they combine electronic beats and alternative rock with their unique style of jazz improvisation. Maria weaves the canvas with piano, synths, and electronics, and Riccardo masterfully orchestrates the temporal flow of drums, bass synths, and electronics. Like the previous offerings, this track is an electronic jazz piece of art that takes a refined and fresh approach to composing.

“Leaving” evolves with time, blending guest saxophonist Alex Hithcock’s woodwind melodies with syncopated high-hat-like ethereal grooves embedded in a relatively static percussion. On piano, spacious and lingering harmonies paint the haunting nostalgia and introspection. The apparent simplicity of the beat allows the leashed melodic lines to expand into a divergent stream of ideas.

Initially, the song dwells within the functional and tonal boundary of contemporary electronic and ambient music, but soon, the established structure crumbles. A more ambiguous soundscape emerges and unifies the discrete dots of tone and timbre in a liquified and malleable plane of tonality. Spacey arpeggios on guitar over underlying sustained synth deepens the desire for closure. By the time it comes near the climactic point, unbeknownst to the listeners, they have already embarked on a path of endless waxing and waning of incessant emotional tide.
