Jay Phelps, the renowned trumpeter, composer, DJ, and entrepreneur, has carved a distinctive niche in the jazz world. His self-released new single, ‘Sunset in June,’ is a Jazz Amapiano track that blends the warm textures of Jazz and African grooves to produce an ear-warming sound.
With over 20 years of experience, Phelps’ warm and resonant trumpet tone is instantly recognisable. Born in Canada and now a prominent figure in the UK jazz scene, Phelps has collaborated with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Shabaka Hutchings, Amy Winehouse and more. His versatility extends to radio presenting on Jazz FM and Worldwide FM, and his entrepreneurial spirit shines through his music casting agency, SoulEndvr, which partners with Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, and the BBC.
Last year, Phelps released ‘The Now’, his seventh release as a leader with Apple Music subsidiary label Platoon. Moreover, he continues his YouTube documentary series, “Ear to the Ground,” spotlighting jazz artists globally.
‘Sunset in June’ starts with a catchy Afrobeat and base groove to prepare the stage for the mesmerising trumpet solos. The whole track is written with the same Afrobeat, with the improvisations of the bass line. In the middle, the jazz guitar groove takes attention, but the overall sax melody is the classic part of this track. The track features Phelps on trumpet, keys, and production, alongside Menelik Claffey on bass, Nicola Guida on Rhodes, Tom Ford on guitar, and a Becky Alice vocal sample.
‘Sunset in June’ showcases Phelps’ artistry as an experienced composer in the jazz scene. The track is set to release this Friday.
