‘The Other Side’ is the silky and soulful closing track from Sandman Project’s highly anticipated debut album “Where Did You Go?”.
Sandman Project, led by guitarist Tal Sandman from Tel Aviv, is well known for its brass-heavy sound and peerless blend of Ethio-jazz, Afrobeat, American soul music, psychedelic, and Mediterranean funk. This track is a succinct capsulation of these unique traits. It is rooted in jazz and boasts a myriad of musical exploration and cinematic soundscapes. It is a musical journey that begins in West Africa through Ethiopia and ends in the Middle East. Moreover, it creates an electrifying psychedelic groove which is bound to take the listener on a multicultural musical experience of colours and rhythms from around the globe.
Right off the bat, ‘The Other Side’ takes control of the flow of time with its eclectic and pan-genre instrumentation. The key factor to this is the musical upbringing and education of Tal and the ongoing influence of saxophonist Abate Barihun, sometimes known as the Ethiopian John Coltrane. The orchestration of Sandman’s electric guitar, Tal Avraham’s trumpet, Tal Eyal’s percussion, Noam Cherchie’s drums and Ariel Harrosh’s bass is perfect throughout. Together, they flawlessly stay in a pocket and keep the intensity at the same level. The drums and trumpet impart an openness to the sound, along with the synth and organ provided by producer Tomer Baruch. The track is elevated to new heights by Dafna Shilon, a Tel-Aviv-based neo-soul singer who pours her soul into every word.
The Sandman Project has always been all about experimentation and exploration, and it is evident from ‘The Other Side’.
