‘Figures’ is the opening track of the EP ‘Decaying Light’ by Tapani Rinne & Juha Mäki-Patola. After a couple of years since their stunning debut album ‘Open,’ the duo is returning.

Tapani Rinne, a sax and clarinet chameleon, has made his mark on Finland’s music scene since the 1980s. Tapani co-founded the genre-bending RinneRadio, weaving his melodies through solo albums and collaborations.

Juha Mäki-Patola, an iconic figure on Finland’s music scene for over a decade, incorporates his diverse experience as a producer, musician, and engineer into introspective compositions. Inspired by neoclassical luminaries such as Jóhann Jóhannsson, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Alva Noto, and Brian Eno, his work resonates with profound reflection.

In their new EP ‘Decaying Light, ‘ the duo expands on their sonic visions with moments from Nordic atmospheres and hypnotic soundscapes. They produce hovering layers, drone-based minimalism, and playful dialogues between woodwinds, pianos, and synthesisers.

‘Figures’ starts with an ambient, dreamy vibe that encourages a sense of calm and contemplation. The background textural layer of sound becomes complete with a simple yet appealing piano melody, which is later answered by the beautiful sax melody. All this time, you will feel the presence of the dreamy vibe with woodwinds and synth, and taking an intimate listen makes you feel unique with the deepest harmony.

With a lush, painterly sound that elegantly merges ambient, jazz, and neo-classical elements, Tapani and Juha effortlessly combine their skills to craft a mesmerising EP. Listening to ‘Figures’ will help you escape your tiring hassle and get lost in the dreamy soundscape.
