It’s time to immerse ourselves in the festive spirit as December is well and truly underway. And what better way to do that than with a specially curated guest playlist? Today, we have the pleasure of sharing a gift from an extraordinary talent – Johanna Burnheart, the renowned avant-garde violinist, singer and composer.
Burnheart recently released her second full-length album, ‘Bär’, where modern UK jazz, contemporary classical, and Berlin-inspired electronic music meet.
‘Bär’ follows her debut ‘Burnheart’, which was included in The Guardian’s 30 best new artists for 2021 and earned plaudits across the likes of MOJO, Record Collector, Jazzwise, Jazziz, Shindig!, BBC Radio 6 Music, Worldwide FM, and more.

Burnheart’s new album further utilises the violin, a seldom-used instrument in modern jazz, placing her in a unique subcategory. Burnheart’s new album combines classical violin and contemporary jazz, influenced by her experiences in both genres and her time in Berlin, which shaped her musical style, fusing elements of experimental electronic music. It’s an impressive body of work that showcases a diverse range of artistic expressions.
Head below to find out more about Johanna’s playlist selections:
“I challenge you to embrace the different moods that are presented to you in this playlist. You might feel this is a strange mix of tunes and genres. But these songs are all from my reality, which to me makes it a very normal mix of tunes. So who’s to say what’s normal and what’s strange.
Some of these artists have been accompanying me through my recent years, and some are old classics I like to come back to once in a while. All of them directly or indirectly inspire my own music – sometimes just through the sentiment the music conveyed when it was created. I hope you enjoy listening to the curation of my moods.”
