We’re delighted to welcome Jasmine Myra, an exciting young composer, saxophonist and bandleader from Leeds, back to the site.
We featured Myra back in 2019 when we chatted shortly after releasing Bright To Light with her eponymous quintet.
Joining the wealth of talent on Matthew Halsall’s Gondwana Records, Myra opens up a fresh musical chapter with the release of her debut solo single, ‘New Beginnings’.
Myra wrote on Instagram: “This is a song I wrote at the start of lockdown, when I was feeling very lost. It’s about finding the strength to work through mental health struggles and coming out the other end feeling stronger and more in touch with yourself. These periods can be very challenging at the time, but they are also cathartic and important for growth. This is what New Beginnings means to me.”
Her music has a genre-crossing sound, as much Kenny Wheeler as it is Bonobo and Ólafur Arnalds. The single resonates with a dreamlike quality that draws the listener into its meditative world; her diverse influences are evident.
On the track, she is backed by Jasper Green, Ben Haskins, Gavin Barras, George Hall and Greg Burns, with production by label owner Halsall himself; listen to New Beginnings below.
