John Haycock blends West African folk with electronica on new EP

John Haycock - ‘Honey Mango’, ft Sarathy Korwar.

We have a great new track to share with you from multi-instrumentalist John Haycock called ‘Honey Mango’, featuring Sarathy Korwar.

This is the first single from Haycock’s forthcoming ‘In a Boppy Mood’ EP that’s dropping on 20th August. The release part-funded by the Steve Reid Foundation finds trustee Emanative on production and mixing duties while Sarathy (a previous awardee) on tabla. The pair also provided advice and guidance to Haycock.

The four-track EP results from John studying kora (21 string West African harp) for ten years with Gambian griot master Jali Nyonkoling Kuyateh, including spending time researching, travelling and immersing the Gambian culture.

Musically wander through ancient West African folk melodies and modern electronica, everything from the gentle kora plucks to the warm clarinet, dreamy ambience and the hypnotic tabla strokes are just heavenly. It’s a beautiful composition that is well worth your ears.

Visit Haycock’s Bandcamp page to pre-order In a Boppy Mood and head to his website while you’re at it.
