We haven’t stopped listening to Y-Bayani’s enticing music ever since we stumbled upon him back in 2018, so we’re excited that he’s releasing an album with Baby Naa, called Nsie Nsie, this May via Philophon.
As with his previous releases, the wonderfully named Band of Enlightenment, Reason & Love provide the mellow roots-reggae backdrop.
Having fortuitously teamed up with Baby Naa for his 2018 track ‘Rehwe Mie Enyim’, when another singer didn’t show up her cheerful tones is the perfect companion to Y-Bayani’s magnetic charm.
Featuring the previously heard singles ‘Get Away’, ‘Rehwe Mie Enyim’ and ‘Asembi Ara Amba’, the nine-track project sees Y-Bayani take his lovely Afro roots reggae sound to another level.
Speaking about the genesis of the album Philophon owner Max Weissenfeldt explains: “The whole thing was born out of chance. First, I started to record reggae just because my friend Josie is a reggae drummer – honestly, I have few reggae records compared to like several thousand jazz records in my collection, it wasn’t something I was too much into at that time. Then, meeting Y-Bayani, who had only one song in his repertoire which wasn’t even originally a reggae song; and last but not least, the discovery of Baby Naa when one of our vocalists didn’t show up. It was her first time ever in a recording studio. Maybe I could have named the group The Band of Coincidence, Fortune and Chance instead?”
