Johannesburg-based imprint Mushroom Hour Half Hour show us all why they’re one of most exciting labels right now with their latest release from Dumama & Kechou.
The duo are releasing their debut LP, titled Buffering Juju, this March and they’ve blessed us with a preview of what’s to come in the shape of ‘Mother Time’.
Recorded primarily between Cape Town and Johannesburg in 2019, Buffering Juju features glittering contributions from Siya Makuzeni (SPAZA), Nobuhle Ashanti, Angel Bat Dawid, Shane Cooper, Dion Monti and more.
Buffering Juju is a concept album based around the story of a woman who is leaving prison. The 8-track LP combines jazz, Xhosa folk music, and electronic loops with hip hop influences and instrumentation. According to the label, the album is “a conduit to a past we were not necessarily present for and a future where threatened indigenous technologies thrive in an increasingly digitised world.”
