Album: Timo Lassy and Teppo Mäkynen

Timo Lassy and Teppo Mäkynen share self-titled album.

Crowning years of collaboration playing together in various bands (Teddy Rok 7, The Five Corners Quintet, Jo Stance, Timo Lassy Band) Helsinki artists Timo Lassy and Teppo Mäkynen combined forces for their first full-length album as a duo.

Their eponymous album out via We Jazz Records features Lassy on saxophone and Mäkynen on drums and production duties. Consisting of 13 short but sweet tracks each clocking in at around three minutes, the result is genuinely gripping and a true testament to the duo’s musical talents.

The sound across the album ranges from spiritual-tinged free playing to delicious 4/4 groove hard-hitters, showcasing producer “Teddy Rok” Mäkynen’s love for electronic music. Their playing throughout is crisp, super tight and easy on the ear, and the feel is warm and inviting. Through years of musical companionship, the chemistry between them exudes the spirit of their relationship. Tracks worth a special mention are ‘Fallow’, ‘Catawba’, ‘Aero’, ‘Kobi’ and ‘Heliotrope’.

Both Lassy and Mäkynen are mainstays of the vibrant Finnish jazz scene, and this boundary-pushing album of minimal, yet intricate soundscapes is one of the most innovative, exciting and distinctive jazz records you’ll hear all year.

This one’s on heavy rotation.
