Between The Cracks: 5 New Releases You Need To Hear

This week's list of essential new albums incudes Pinty, King Midas Sound, TwoSpeak and more.

With so much good music coming through thick and fast, it’s easy for brand-new music to drop online and go overlooked. To help prevent this, we’ve picked five unmissable releases that we think you need to hear. Stream music from King Midas Sound, Maurice Louca, Houssam Gania, Pinty, and TwoSpeak. If you like what you hear, hit the links and support the artists.

King Midas Sound – Solitude

The Bug (aka Kevin Martin), and poet Roger Robinson recently returned under the guise of King Midas Sound for a new album, ‘Solitude’. The 12-track LP is their first release since Fennesz collaboration Edition1 on Ninja Tune which dropped in 2015. Across the record, Martin provides a predominantly beatless musical backdrop, simultaneously minimal and menacing, but periodically extremely beautiful. It stalks the isolated characters created by Robinson’s haunting vocals; as the poet shapes, the protagonists troubled lives into increasingly desolate narratives. Welcome to solitude…

Maurice Louca – Elephantine

On Elephantine, the gifted, and prolific Cairo-based Maurice Louca guides a 12-piece ensemble through a panoramic 38-minute odyssey, which he describes as his most ambitious project yet. Featuring stellar talents like Tommaso Cappellato on drums/percussion, Pasquale Mirra vibraphone, Nadah El Shazly vocals, Natik Awayez on oud this wonderous project is something you need to hear!

Houssam Gania – Mosawi Swiri

Hailing from Morocco, Houssam Gania the youngest son of the late great Maalem Mahmoud Gania leads a talented band including his brother Hamza Gania, and Mohamed Benzaid on his debut album Mosawi Swiri. Standouts include ‘Moulay Lhacham’, ‘Kobayli Bala’, ‘Lah Lahrbi Ya Molay’ and the title track. This is another very special release from Hive Mind Records. We won’t say anything else about the album, simply start playing and enjoy.

Pinty – City Limits

Peckham based DJ & MC Pinty comes through with his debut EP. On City Limits, he traverses hip hop, house, UKG, jazz and darker electronic sounds with ease. The six-track project features an array of talented producers such as DJ JD Sports (aka King Krule), Maxwell Owin, Mali Baden-Powell, and Oliver Palfreyman. We simply can’t wait to hear what he has in store for us next. For now, though, check out City Limits below.

TwoSpeak – Twoism

On their debut EP London-based band TwoSpeak creates a colourful collage of jazz, folk, rock, and electronic mixed with Cuban, Brazillian and Moroccan music. The band pull out all the stops to deliver a deliciously upbeat, energetic and utterly dazzling affair.
