Between The Cracks: 5 Albums You Need To Hear

Between The Cracks: 5 Albums You Need To HearWith so much good music coming through thick and fast, it’s easy for brand-new music to drop online and go overlooked. To help prevent this, we’ve picked five albums that you may have missed, but need to hear. Stream albums from SLUGish Ensemble, MALK, Eric Chenaux, Peggy Lee and Woven Entity. If you like what you hear, support the artists.

SLUGish Ensemble – An Eight Out of Nine

Multi-instrumentalist and composer, Steven Lugerner recently dropped the inaugural album from SLUGish Ensemble, titled An Eight Out of Nine. Across seven tracks the collective straddles the lines between pop, rhythm & blues, jazz improvisation and minimalism.

MALK – Death From A Love

We’ll admit that we’re a little late with ‘Death From A Love’ by Philadelphia producer MALK, but this album which dropped late in 2017 is an absolute monster. A breathtaking and exhilarating ride through cut and paste Hip Hop sampling that moves in the same cyberpunk and vaporwave corners that Oneohtrix Point Never also larks within. There’s not much else to say, other than you need to hear this record now!

Eric Chenaux – Slowly Paradise

Eric Chenaux’s shared his new solo record Slowly Paradise early last year and it’s a lovely collection of mostly long songs guided by soothing, buttery singing and bent, fried fretwork. Put this wonderful album on rotation today!

Peggy Lee – Echo Painting

Cellist, improviser, composer Peggy Lee new album Echo Painting was a late discovery but one of my favourites from last year. The Vancouver- based artist delivers an album that is multi-layered and texturally varied, featuring driving rhythmic vamps, incendiary improvisation and sometimes achingly beautiful melodic compositions. This is my first taste of Lee and clearly, I’ve been missing out big time!

Woven Entity – Two

Much like their debut album from a few years back Woven Entity’s second record is a really interesting free jazz improv affair. This LP is pure magic and once again Woven Entity takes jazz in new and exciting directions. Another favourite record of 2018 discovered in 2019!                                                                                                                           Buy
