Between The Cracks: 5 New Releases You Need To Hear

With so much good music coming through thick and fast, it’s easy for new music to drop online and go unnoticed. To help prevent this, we’ve picked five releases you need to hear. Stream music from Laurence Pike, Space Ghost, Mary Halvorson, Wahever Records and Marenn Sukie. If you like what you hear, support the artists.

Laurence Pike – Distant Early Warning

Originally conceived as a technological and spiritual jazz suite for drums, Distant Early Warning is a series of solo performances for kit and sampler recorded live in a single day. A fantastic album that gets better with each play.

Space Ghost – Endless Light

Oakland newcomer Space Ghost ComES on like a brainchild to Dam-Funk and Mutant Beat Dance, Ghost’s sound falls off the shelf between a number of distinct reference points: Lone’s early tropical synaesthetic; the modern funk of Funkosphere; the intimate tapes out of PPU. In a sea of Soundcloud copycats, he’s a revelation. Well worth a listen.

Mary Halvorson – Code Girl

Guitarist and composer Mary Halvorson follows up 2016’s excellent ‘Away With You’ with this spellbinding album featuring Amirtha Kidambi (vocals), Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet), Michael Formanek (bass) and Tomas Fujiwara (drums). As always everything the intensely creative Halvorson touches turns to gold.

Whaever Records – Morning Cartoon

Wahever Records presents ‘Morning Cartoon’, a new venture combining drum machines and wind instrument harmonies, interspersed with percussion in wood and metal – humans breathing with an electronic heart. Superb stuff as always!

Marenn Sukie – Malinal

Marenn Sukie dropped this six-track delight late last year with Banoffee Pies Records. The EP span the moods of trip-hop, beats, and chill out in a Bonobo esque fashion, intermittent head nodding included. An impressive release from start to finish.
