Album Of The Week: Makindu – Makindu

Makindu
★★★★☆

Recorded in London at the Wahever Records studios Makindu’s debut album presents the transcendental visions of tabla player Randeep Bilkhu and clarinet player Tim Wall, as they navigate a cross-cultural journey together from Australia to India, Europe and the UK.

Inspired by both Bilkhu revisiting and fully immersing herself into her Sikh heritage, and Wall’s discovery of this musical and spiritual tradition, the album captures a unique time between the pair.

The eight-track release features the sublime talents of Nepali vocalist Shreya Rai, harpist Alice Phelps and bassist Robyn Hemmings, and drawing from a diverse pool of influences from Alice Coltrane to Nepali folk music; this stunning album comes packed with creativity and free expression.

The feel of the album is wholly spiritual and experimental. For a quick snapshot of the album check out opener “Shaan”, ” The Journey” and “Haami” which effortlessly illustrate the culturally diverse range of sounds that the band captures on the album.

Ideal uplifting music for the long winter nights ahead.

Makindu’s self-titled debut album is out now – buy from Bandcamp.
