NYC-based jazz meets hip-hop group QNA‘s music is like a mix between BADBADNOTGOOD, Robert Glasper, Hiatus Kaiyote.
Now that might sound like an exaggeration, but one listen to their newest offering, and we’re pretty sure it will have you feeling the same.
A wonderfully arranged track in which Supe and Bush Tea fiercely deliver rhymes and Marina Espine’s velvety vocals delicately meet highly accomplished musicianship, “Retrograde” is one that will have you coming back for more.
QNA says of “Retrograde”: “This is a single that was particularly inspired by one of my favourite “hidden songs” by Kendrick. If you watch the “Alright” music video, there’s a short song in the beginning. Once I heard that the wheels started turning. TJ wrote basically the entire song, and at the time, we were working with Bush Tea. We recorded it but decided to sit on it until XII was done. It’s been awhile since we’ve recorded it…probably 2 years by now, so it’s weird and interesting to be able to look back into this period of time.”
Along with the new single the band has announced, a new project called XII —due out February 2018 via Black 17 Media and The Orchard. The EP is focused on self-actualisation; “it’s about understanding that you’re in a transitional period between where you are and where you are going to be. We used the 12th tarot card, the hanged man, to symbolise it all.”
