Say hello to Nubya Garcia, the London-based saxophonist and composer who works as part of six-piece, Maisha, and the Nérija septet. Taking a step away from band duties Garcia is set to release her first solo project “Nubya’s 5ive” via Jazz re:freshed on May 9th. The 5 song project which “explores the common ground between progressive jazz, hip hop and soulful, groove led rhythms — is set to cement her credentials as one of hardest working in UK music.” The EP features a wealth of musical talent including Joe Armon-Jones (Piano), Moses Boyd (Drums), Daniel Casimir (Bass), Femi Koloeso (Drums), Sheila Maurice-Grey (Trumpet) and Theon Cross (Tuba). Here, we have the EPs opening track “Lost Kingdoms”, a distinctly mellow, yet intense affair, that unravels itself through its winding and hypnotising arrangements. Listen below.
