Album Of The Week: Alfonso Calvo Septet – Sea Ahead

Sea Ahead - Alfonso Calvo Septet

Here’s a breath of fresh air from Alfonso Calvo Septet. Not being familiar with their work, I was more than delighted to hear their new album, titled ‘Sea Ahead’.  The Alfonso Calvo Septet is the brainchild of  double bass player Alfonso Calvo who alongside Pablo Castaño (alto & soprano), Xosé Miguélez (tenor & flute), Rubén Salvador (trumpet & flugel), Bruno Valle (trombone), Iago Mouriño (piano), Naíma Acuña (drums) and special guest Ton Risco (vibes) seduced my ears with the opening track “En dous pasos” and that was enough for us. If you’re looking for a piece of music to sooth you, then the title track is just what you need. The track prominently features  Ton Risco’s warm, delicate vibraphone which lends the track a dreamy touch. A few other notable tracks are “6 AM”, “Anna May ” both of which should get your heads bobbing and toes tapping in no time. If you’re in the mood to be swept away into a beautiful jazz, hard bop sonic realm, don’t hesitate to press play on this tantalising piece of work.
