Jeb Loy Nichols returns to us with Ya Smell Me? and it’s an impressive addition to his fantastic catalogue. The cult Country soul singer has been slowly lifting the layers off Ya Smell Me? for a few months, so when I finally got to listen to the entire mini-album, I knew it would be special. As always Jeb’s voice gives you a soft massage against the supremely crafted instrumentation with that signature soulfulness that made us love his previous work. Putting together a lovely laid-back slice of Americana on “7 Days In December” and heading towards folk-jazz on “Wintering Of The Year,” these two songs hit the sweet spot. Elsewhere tracks like, “Regret”, “My Mistake” and “Pretty Lonesome” have a real authentic feel making them sound like long lost classics from the 60’s/70’s something lacking in a lot of today’s mainstream music. The perfect soundtrack on this cold winter’s day.
