Jean Deaux’s Soular System project almost passed me by, but thanks to Via Rosa, who reposted a playlist by THEMpeople containing a track by Deaux. The track in question was BDAY SUIT P2, one of the standout cuts on the project. The eagerly-awaited project finally dropped late last year and after giving it a spin, it is everything I had hoped for. The music is downtempo, hauntingly sexy and without any guest appearances on the 11 tracks, Deaux voice takes centre stage. Production comes from the likes of THEMpeople,Van River, Tim Suby, Binta, Donnie Trumpet and more. With Soular System, Deaux songs explore the realms of real life drama through the experimental R&B sound that is definitely all her own. I’m looking forward to the next instalment already!
