Stones Throw Records archetypal practitioner, Jonwayne returns with a new single entitled “The Abandon Planet”. The left of centre rapper delivers a dark, somber track on which he deals with the subject of his refusal to be part of the whole rap meme and how he’s operating in his own space. In typical Jonwayne style there’s no real hook, no chorus to get into, just a minimal beat and some clever story-telling and wordplay from the talented rapper. Pretty much everything about his approach to rap can be summed with lines like “they’re so dumb they think the Vice President is Joe Budden / they Biden my style, they Biden my style.” Listening to this, gets me even more intrigued about what he’ll do next!
