Legendary jazz musician and Afrofuturist pioneer Sun Ra would have turned 100 this year. To pay tribute to Ra and the lasting legacy he left behind, King Britt created The Fholston Paradigm Live Transmission Mix, a displaced re-interpretation of Ra’s seminal Space is the Place. The mix by Britt is also part of the Chicago Jazz Festival and Dark Matter Coffee’s launch of Astro Black, a coffee blend that’s supposedly “certified for intergalactic travel, for folks with avant-garde taste”. Take a listen to Britt’s inspired 18-minute otherworldly reworking of Ra’s timeless classic.
King Britt will perform “The Fholston Paradigm Live Transmission Mix,” at Constellation on May 21st. The event serves as both the launch of “Astro-Black,” but also as the official start for Chicago Jazz Festival’s Neighborhood Nights.
