Eric Borders, aka E. Lundquist, is a composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who has quickly become one of our favourites. He’s a pianist, synth enthusiast, multi-instrumentalist, and arranger. Borders creates warm, cinematic music rooted in soul-jazz, funk, R&B, library records, and live-band groove.
Over the years, before releasing music as E. Lundquist, Borders founded Balance and the Traveling Sounds, a seven-piece group blending hip-hop, soul, funk, and rock. He later developed the Captain Supernova / C.SN alias, building a cosmic jazz-funk world across releases with Cold Busted and Ropeadope.
His forthcoming album ‘Chasing My Reflections,’ releasing next Friday, explores identity, resilience, and clarity. It’s a wrestling match with who you were, who you are, and who you are becoming, packaged in soul, R&B, and modern grooves. Lundquist taps into emotions that set it apart from any of the composer’s prior releases, and a large component of expressing the sentiment and core feelings of the record on a new level is the introduction of various guest vocalists. It features the voices of those who have inspired him, including Kendra Morris, Taylor Williams, India Blue and more.
Ahead of the release, we’re thrilled to have him put together a playlist, featuring songs that inspired his upcoming record. The playlist draws on influences from Roy Ayers to Marvin Gaye, Billy Paul, Lady Wray, and more.
Before you press play, take a moment to read a few words from Eric. Then settle in and enjoy the sounds.
This playlist brings together old and new songs that inspired me while making Chasing My Reflections. The warmth, arrangements, and soulful grooves of artists like Roy Ayers, Marvin Gaye, and the Isley Brothers helped shape the album’s foundation. Newer music from Monophonics, Lady Wray, and El Michels Affair inspired me to explore how those influences could grow into something personal and current. Across these songs, I’m drawn to the feeling in the performances and the way the music creates space for reflection. Making this album was my way of bringing those inspirations together while telling my own story.
