ONMO – Inner Games (TS Premiere)

Some bands seem to arrive fully formed, as if they’ve always been there, like a song you already know.

That was my first impression of London-based ensemble ONMO, a band that feels like it’s been playing in your head for years, and you’ve only just caught up.

With an expansive blend of contemporary jazz, minimalism, and lyrical improvisation, the sextet is set to release its debut album, Time And Spirit, via Clonmell Jazz Social on Friday.

Led by guitarist and composer Jean de Talhouët, the band is rounded out by Jonathan Chung (tenor saxophone), Mike Soper (trumpet), Rupert Cox (piano/keyboards), Huw V Williams (double and electric bass), and Joost Hendrickx (drums).

Their music pulls from everywhere, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy, Vince Guaraldi’s Charlie Brown scores, Yesterday’s New Quintet, Steve Reich and more.

‘Inner Games‘ wraps you up in a funky, mellow glow from the very first note. It’s a funky, nimble, hip-hop-flavoured affair that is deliciously captivating. With glistening instrumentation and an instant head-nod bounce, it’s the kind of infectious track you can play on repeat without ever getting tired of it.

Enjoy the track below and look out for the album this Friday.
