With ‘Crops’, Amsterdam-based duo POMELO introduces a quietly arresting glimpse into their debut album LORELESS, a record rooted in vulnerability, presence, and the weight of simply being. The duo of Luke Elliott and Wynnm Murphy embrace a stripped-back, intimate sound here, where atmosphere does most of the emotional heavy lifting.
Speaking about the album, the duo says, “Unlike earlier projects in our respective careers that often felt like labours of love, this album felt like pure flow. There have never been timelines, goals, marks to make or expectations, and it has come alive on its own.”
Built on a lo-fi foundation, ‘Crops’ unfolds through muted electronic rhythms, soft synth washes, and a delicate, bell-like motif that lingers in the background like a thought you can’t quite shake.
The vocal delivery sits somewhere between singing and speaking, hushed and inward-facing, as if the listener has stumbled into a private moment. Lines circle back on themselves, especially the recurring tension of wanting connection while resisting it, giving the track a looping, almost meditative structure. Nothing resolves cleanly, and that feels intentional.
‘Crops’ doesn’t aim for dramatic peaks. Instead, it stays suspended in its own emotional space, slowly building texture and then dissolving into it. It’s a subtle but compelling introduction to POMELO’s world, one where restraint, mood, and honesty carry more weight than anything overt.
