Treat your taste buds to these mouthwatering leftovers!
Keeping up with the daily flood of music is impossible. We try to share everything, but gems slip through the cracks. The Leftovers fixes that (a little): every Friday, we dig through the emails and drop five releases in bite-sized pieces we couldn’t ignore. This week, Dumama, Claire Dickson, MF Robots, and more. Dig in.
MF Robots (Brand New Heavies founder Jan Kincaid and renowned UK vocalist Dawn Joseph) recently shared the fourth single from their forthcoming ‘III’ album. ‘Show Us The Way’ is an energetic departure from the duo’s previous singles, and while it still showcases the duo’s eclecticism, it leans heavily into jazzier, deeper territory. This one will have you moving quickly.
With the imminent release of Juha Mäki-Patola’s third solo album, Momentary Movements of Landscapes, the Finnish multi-instrumentalist and producer is offering the beautiful lead track, ‘Moment 2′. The record consists of twelve intricately layered pieces, each offering introspection and calm, evoking imagined landscapes and meditative soundscapes. Ahead of the release, wrap your ears around the gorgeous ‘Moment 2’ below.
Welsh multi-instrumentalist and producer Huw Marc Bennett recently announced his new album ‘Heol Las’. Sinking his hands deep into the soil of South Wales, Bennett reimagines traditional melodies from the Morgannwg/Glamorgan region through an earth-toned palette of folk, jazz and psychedelic roots. Drawn from two melodies recorded side-by-side in the notebook of 18th-century bard Edward Williams, the new single ‘Y Fedwen’ (The Birch) is waiting for you below.
‘No Abiding City’ is the new single (and video) by Dumama, who you may remember put out a brilliant collaborative album, Buffering Juju, in 2020 with fellow South African musician and artist Kechou. The track – sung in isiXhosa – weaves the ethereal acoustic resonance of the uhadi bow into a propulsive, syncopated rhythm, produced and arranged by the hands of feminine force, Nandi Ndlovu. One of the few uhadi players in the world, Dumama’s use of the traditional Xhosa bowed instrument guides her profound storytelling, blending ancestral roots into an urgent electro-acoustic palette – captured in the track’s vibrant, future-analogue video. All in all, it is exquisite stuff and something you need in your life.
New music from Berlin-based vocalist and composer Claire Dickson. ‘Doors’ is a dreamy ambient pop track. Built around a catchy synth ostinato, it creates a backdrop for Dickson’s vocal layers to soar. Her forthcoming album, Balance, features seven tracks that emerged from Dickson’s daily improvisations, exploring the push-and-pull between order, chaos, and personal growth. Stream the single below; it’s gorgeous!
