The Leftovers

Treat your taste buds to these mouthwatering leftovers!

Trying to keep up with the daily deluge of music is like trying to drink from a firehose. While we do our best to share all the good music that comes our way, some gems inevitably slip through the cracks. That’s where The Leftovers features come in; each Friday, we serve up five tasty morsels that we couldn’t let slip away into easily digestible snippets. This week, we’re showcasing new music from Makaya McCraven, Tortoise, Yara Asmar and more. Lap up these delectable treats.

Internationally acclaimed drummer, producer, and sonic collagist Makaya McCraven returns to announce four distinct yet interconnected EPs โ€“Techno Logic, The People’s Mixtape, Hidden Out!, and PopUp Shop โ€“ all released on October 31st. Get involved below.

Since surprising us all withย ‘Oganesson’ in April,ย Tortoise keeps things rolling with the announcement of Touch, the first new album from the groundbreaking group since 2016. This new record from the post-everything icons comes via International Anthem and Nonesuch Records on October 24th. Lead single ‘Layered Presence’ โ€” which also comes with a video filmed and directed by Mikel Patrick Avery โ€” is out now.

The always reliable Batov Records welcomes the consistently brilliant, Kutiman, to their highly collectable Middle Eastern Grooves 45s series. ‘Harakaโ€'(“movement”) features powerful rock drums, catchy psychedelic basslines, and mesmerising organ riffs, along with microtonal-bending synths and tabla-inspired percussion. This one’s pretty special – listen below!

Beirut’s Yara Asmar is an artist who has us spellbound with each release, as she consistently brings something new while maintaining her dreamy sound. This is precisely the case with the hauntingly beautiful of ‘wooden giants and mechanical birds’. Look out for Asmar’s new album, ‘everyone I love is sleeping and I love them so so much’, arriving next month via Hive Mind Records.

Simon Popp is a drummer and producer we’ve been checking out for a few years now, and following his last album, Candid, we’re more than a little bit excited for his forthcoming project. On Trio, Popp teams up with Flurin Mรผck and Sebastian Wolfgruber, forming a trio of drummers with unique temperaments and personal styles. Together, they transform into a singular, expressive force. Popp never seems to disappoint, but always seems to surprise! Listen to album opener ‘Hain’ below!
