Treat your taste buds to these mouthwatering leftovers!
Trying to keep up with the daily deluge of music is like trying to drink from a firehose. While we do our best to share all the good music that comes our way, some gems inevitably slip through the cracks. That’s where The Leftovers features come in; each Friday, we serve up five tasty morsels that we couldn’t let slip away into easily digestible snippets. This week, we’re showcasing new music from Or Kantor, Kassa Overall, Tom Gershwin and more. Lap up these delectable treats.
Or Kantor shares ‘The Eternity of a Single Moment,’ the third single from his upcoming album Snake Island, featuring acclaimed trumpeter Sefi Zisling. The track blends hypnotic grooves and sun-bleached surf moods, all topped off by Zisling’s meditative horns – it’s a must listen!
The new Kassa Overall album is shaping up to be something quite special. Last month saw the release of his superfluous remake of Digable Planets’ 90s classic, ‘Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)’. Now, our ears are serenaded with his fresh, jazzed-up version of Wu-Tang Clan’s rap anthem ‘C.R.E.A.M. (CASH RULES EVERYTHING AROUND ME)’. Listen up – it’s really, really, good.
Indianapolis-based Leon Todd Johnson has been recording under the moniker Airport People since 2020. Under that name, Johnson’s engaging neoclassical work flirted with Windham Hill/ECM jazz inflexions while incorporating a deep melodic sensibility that serves as a throughline across his recorded work. Johnson’s second record for Whited Sepulchre Records finds him once again inspired by travel, but as the name change suggests, his work is no longer defined by the space between one place and another. Instead, it focuses on travelling outward and finding home within oneself—both philosophically and musically. This album will captivate you—press play and you’ll get what we mean.
Tom Gershwin’s stunning new album, Wellspring, channels the energy and life constantly surrounding us into vibrant music. Gerwin views music as a limitless source of vitality, continuously renewed by tradition and history. Press play now, you’re in for a treat!
Try playing Diriaou once, and I promise you won’t want to stop listening; it’s that good! Kristen Noguès and John Surman made this entrancing blend of free folk, traditional ambient and modal fest-noz 27 years ago. Despite the passage of time, this musical fusion remains as captivating and fresh as ever. Immersed in Breton music and language, Noguès blended her Celtic harp mastery with Surman’s ECM-label-inspired atmospheric jazz. This album has a knack for making you pause whatever you’re doing and really tune in – brilliant stuff!
