Brooklyn-based outfit Wilder Maker returns with ‘They Laugh That Win’, a softly profound bit that opens the shutter again on their ambitious upcoming triple LP project. It unfolds an atmospheric vignette that is shadowy and introspective, yet punctuated by moments of transparent clarity.
The song floats in on a light, reverb-soaked guitar; there’s a smoky, ambient stillness here that evokes the hushed intimacy of Mark Hollis or the freeform spirit of Takuro Okada. The band strikes a balance between mood and melody, evoking mind-blowing emotions. Instead, it unfolds good-naturedly, inviting you to sit with its musical and lyrical relaxations.
Wilder Maker has straddled the line between avant-pop and indie rock, but this latest version is comfortable in the quiet, filmic spaces of sound. The track is part of the first volume in a three-part series that aims to represent a long, sleepless night from dusk to dawn. Formed in 2014, the band consist of site friend Gabriel Birnbaum along with Nick Jost, Sean Mullins, and Adam Brisbin
‘They Laugh That Win’ stands out not only as a haunting sonic journey but also as a testament to the band’s growing mastery of mood and space. If the subsequent two LPs follow this trail, listeners are in for an emotionally immersive triple-album odyssey. It is a quiet triumph. Allow it to gradually sink in.
The Streets Like Beds Still Warm follows a lonely narrator as he drifts down avenues and in and out of bars and hospital rooms. He thinks on big questions and bigger questions, gets into some trouble, worries about his sick father, grapples with rivals and competitors who could be his friends but are not; he orders cocktails, dreams he is a genius, thinks about God and fate and so on.
