Treat your taste buds to these mouthwatering leftovers!
Trying to keep up with the daily deluge of music is like trying to drink from a firehose. While we do our best to share all the good music that comes our way, some gems inevitably slip through the cracks. That’s where The Leftovers features come in; each Friday, we serve up five tasty morsels that we couldn’t let slip away into easily digestible snippets. This week, we’re showcasing new music from Cochemea, Mark Guiliana, Chip Wickham and more. Lap up these delectable treats.
Acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and composer, Cochemea, returns with his 3rd in a trilogy of albums with Daptone Records. Backed by a powerhouse of eight NYC percussionists and Daptone, this new outing is anchored in the cultural fabric that has nurtured him from the beginning through his Yaqui ancestry. Dive into the title track ‘Ancestros Futuros’ where Cochemea draws from a Yaqui midwife who would bury the navels of newborns in the ground so that future generations would rise and reclaim the land.
Lush prepared piano, soft flute notes, wandering guitar lines and dreamy modular synths in ‘Entrance/Exit’, the new single from producer Jørgen Træen and guitarist and composer Stein Urheim, sweep you to another planet. It’s the first piece of new music from the duo since their Edvard Prize-winning debut, Krympende Klode, in 2021. The track is the first glimpse into their upcoming second album, Galant Galakse, set for release on 22nd August via Action Jazz.
Mark Guiliana has long been heralded as a virtuoso drummer, a master of rhythm. However, with his latest offering, ‘questions (volume one)’, he takes a step away from the percussive thunder and into the delicate embrace of the piano. What you’ll find is an introspective journey that invites us to ponder the unspoken queries of life, all while wrapped in a cocoon of gentle melodies and intricate textures. I’m already looking forward to the next volume.
Time to get jazzy with the new irresistibly hard not to love track ‘Drifting’ from Chip Wickham. Much like the title suggests, Wickham’s soft saxophone melodies glide like a gentle breeze. Wickham’s artistry shines through as he encourages us to “let go and drift,” a sentiment that resonates deeply in a world often tethered by the weight of expectations. The track is from his forthcoming new album, The Eternal Now, which is scheduled for release on September 5th via Gondwana Records.
Aki Rissanen’s latest single,’ For E’, serves as a tantalising prelude to his forthcoming album Imaginary Mountains. This Finnish pianist and composer, known for his innovative approach to jazz, conjures up a track that feels rawer and more visceral than his previous work. Dedicated to Erik Satie, check it out below.
