ย Cultural platform FLEE is gearing up to release ‘Pasรฉ Bรฉl Tan: Francophonies and Creolities in Louisiana’, a new compilation and bilingual book exploring Louisianaโs plural musical heritage through archival recordings, contemporary compositions, and critical reflections. The project maps Louisianaโs Creole and Francophone sonic identity, shaped by African, Native American, Caribbean, and French influencesโa constantly evolving soundscape tied to histories of migration, resistance, and reinvention. First up is Tanz Mein Herzโs ‘Le Natchitoches, ‘ reimagining a Cajun classic as a hypnotic, slow-burning blend of looping guitars and trance-like percussion, transforming tradition into a cosmic, ambient ritual. Batov Records continues to enlighten our ears with heavenly music. Sababa 5ย explore a darker and more sophisticated cinematic blend of psychedelic soul and Middle Eastern rock on ‘Nadir’, their first full-length album of new music since 2023’s ‘Aspan’. The band has released three acclaimed albums, a string of sought-after 45s, and collaborations with vocalists, including Yurika and Sophia Solompon. Get listening!
La Chooma returns with another helping of plant-inspired psychedelic groove on the brilliant Batov Records ( yes, it’s them again), featuring ‘Huachuma’. Their blend of geo-musical traditions, from North and West Africa to Colombia and Cuba, along with elements of dub, makes La Chooma’s music most enjoyable and unique.
Mysterious disco outfit Jiri Jiri delivers an essential EP โ four tracks of sublime, summery European cool hand-picked by Batov Records boss DJ Kobayashi for the labelโs brand new and carefully curated โGive Me Discoโ 12โ series, named after Raja Zahrโs disco classic. Nicola Conte and Nico Lahs team up for an enticing blend of Afro-jazz and leftfield dance that leaves you craving more. ‘EP1’, the debut release from the duo via Schema Records, is a tantalising appetiser that sets the stage for what promises to be a sumptuous feast of sound in the forthcoming releases. The EP features two killer tracks, Macumba De Oxalร and La Danse De LโEsprit.
