Treat your taste buds to these mouthwatering leftovers!
Every Friday, we bring you “The Leftovers.” While we haven’t quite wrangled our thoughts into a full article yet, fear notโwe’ve got you covered. We’ve whipped up these five tasty morsels into easily digestible snippets. This week, we’re showcasing new music from Jeb Loy Nichols, Clay Kin, Kutiman, and more. So go ahead, dive in and savour the delightful tidbits.
With a second album for Timmion Records on the horizon. The prodigious Jeb Loy Nichols shares ‘Step In’. The track is a cool affair, effortlessly blending his Southern soul storytelling and laid-back vocal charm, backed by Cold Diamond & Minkโs analog groove craftsmanship. Nichols’s voice is truly captivating (as always), effortlessly gliding over the mellow soundscape. Listen below and look out for the album, which is scheduled for release later this year.
This collaborative effort between Swiss percussionist Julian Sartorius and UK electronic artist Dan Nicholls encapsulates the spirit of spontaneity and organic creation. Their upcoming album, Vevey, comprises seven tracks, each a distilled fragment of over seven hours of raw, unfiltered creativity. Recorded in the picturesque landscapes surrounding Vevey, Switzerland, the duo’s choice of outdoor settingsโpedalo boats, mountain peaks, and serene forestsโinfuses the music with an authentic sense of place. Whispers of birdsong and the gentle rush of water weave seamlessly into their creations. Visual artist Lou Zon (Louise Boer) rounds out the group, creating videos to accompany both the recorded music and the live experience. If the rest of the album is as good as this track, weโre in for a delight!
Always experimenting, Kutiman is back with his latest genre-jumping offering. Fog Ahead is a fitting description of our current reality and also the title of Kutiman’s second single from his upcoming instrumental EP, Dreams In Aspamia, due out on July 25th. The music and atmosphere in ‘Fog Ahead’ and the entire EP are a study in contrasts, blending nostalgia and current trends to create a sound that is both funky and airy. It grooves hard like a ’90s boom-bap beat but wrapped in a cinematic, warm, and mysterious jazzy downtempo sound. Take a listen to the track belowโyou won’t regret it!
Anything new released on the ever-excellent Astigmatic Records always piques our interest. Get acquainted with Omasta, a Krakรณw-based ensemble, and their debut track, ‘Kazimierz’. Their name refers to one of Krakรณw’s most iconic neighbourhoods, rich in cultural contrasts, history, and a distinct street pulse. What say you of the music? Dirty piano, funk-infused flute, bold horns, and a tight rhythm section define the raw and energetic sound of Omasta. An absolute must-listen!
Last month saw the arrival of Joey Waronker & Pete Min, who unveiled the lead single ‘Tangled Woods’ from their forthcoming collaborative album King King. The duo keeps the ball rolling with another killer cut in the form of the title track. The two tracks are setting us up nicely for the record, which will be released on July 11th through Min’s Colorfield Records.
