Album: Alberto Novello & Rob Mazurek – Sun Eaters

Imagine two musicians diving headfirst into the unknown, crafting new compositions on the fly. They spend a day in the studio with zero planning and no clue about the musical journey ahead. The result? Like a jazz broadcast beaming directly from the far reaches of the cosmos!

Rob Mazurek and Alberto Novello create a brilliant changing musical universe that unites the concepts of modular synthesis and free jazz improvisation through their work on Sun Eaters. For an album that arrives from instant creativity, it sounds super tight, with Novello producing pulsing electronic patterns while Mazurek integrates trumpet, percussive bells, and sampler sounds into the spontaneous recording at the artist-run Dobialab studio in Northern Italy.

The music delivers a spiritual experience through its blacklight-lit ceremony, which unites universal magnificence with personal intimacy through its rhythmic process. The modular synth lines from Novello generate waves of sound until they change and resemble extraterrestrial radio signals, while Mazurek produces trumpet sounds that manifest as energetic signals which transform between song-like expressions and broken electronic voices. Between Mazurek and Novello, the musical connection flows smoothly, thus erasing the clear distinction between how acoustic instruments meet electronic ones while taking down these corridors between written structures and spontaneous playing.

With four of the six tracks clocking in over the seven-minute mark, much is to be enjoyed here. And the expansive pieces ‘Cosmic Debris’, ‘Luchadores Sudden Embrace’, ‘Ricochet Edge Verse’ and ‘A New Mycological Framework of Narrative’ are indeed the highlights.

The experimental methods of Sun Eaters avoid becoming unapproachable for listeners, with the music moving continuously, taking in new shapes without losing its deep engagement. The album showcases how a chance encounter can lead to creating something mysteriously unique and powerfully one-of-a-kind.
