The Leftovers

Treat your taste buds to these mouthwatering leftovers!

Every Friday, we bring you “The Leftovers.” While we haven’t quite wrangled our thoughts into a full article yet, fear notโ€”we’ve got you covered. We’ve whipped up these five mouth-watering leftovers into easily digestible snippets. This week, we’re showcasing new music from Secular Music Group, Tom Sochas, The Young Mothers, Takuro Okada, and Keanu Nelson. Tuck in and enjoy.

Secular Music Group lands on 2 Headed Deer for a reissue of their debut album. The brainchild of composer Christian Ruggiero and multi-instrumentalist Yannis Panos, guitarist Ted Morcaldi, reedist Greg Lapine and percussionist Tim Walsh complete the lineup. The quintet explore free jazz, library music, and American minimalism. The album was captured on a vintage tape machine and echoes UK jazz, European avant-garde, 60s/’70s ensembles, contemporary groups like Natural Information Society, and Matthew Halsallโ€™s Gondwana Orchestra.

Jazz music often finds itself lost in the echo of its complexity; Tom Sochas’ new album, ‘Facing North’, is an exquisite love letter to the mountains that transcends mere appreciation. Across ten tracks, Sochas threads nature, social consciousness, and a hopeful vision for the future of both climbers and the majestic ecosystems they traverse. The album artwork, captured by fine-art mountain photographer Thomas Crauwels, complements the music perfectly, visually representing the majesty and fragility of these natural wonders.

After a six-year break, The Young Mothers return with their long-awaited third album. The band, founded by Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt HaฬŠker Flaten, brings together an explosive mix of free jazz, hard-hitting punk energy, and hip-hop rhythms. This is another impressive offering from the band. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another six years for their next release.

The new album by Japanese guitarist and improviser Takuro Okada gathers a decade’s worth of ever-evolving dream-pop and minimalist jazz. Okada’s distinctive sound combines ethereal, ambient textures with rich guitar plucks, leaving a lasting impact on listeners.

Luritja artist Keanu Nelson traces the afterglow of Wilurarrakutu with a two-track 7โ€, cut from the same home-studio haze with producer Yuta Matsumura. The pair continue their singular weave of community-rooted storytelling and elemental electronics shaped with the gear at hand.
