On Cicero Nights, James Weir’s Blue Earth Sound emerges with a meditative and richly cinematic debut, a beautiful statement of identity rooted in jazz but unbound by genre. Recorded at Chicago’s International Anthem warehouse, a spiritual home for the city’s experimental vanguard, the forthcoming eight-track instrumental project feels like a long-lost film score unearthed from the analog archives’ of 1970s soul-jazz, reimagined for the modern Midwest.

The lead single, ‘Mariposa’, is the ideal entry point. Its pastoral piano phrases, shimmering horns, and soft flute melodies unfold like golden-hour light through the blinds, quietly euphoric and deeply personal. The track exemplifies the album’s emotional centre: hopeful, searching, warm.

Weir shares: “The song was inspired by my hometown in Minnesota and dedicated to my wife Morgan. I pictured a colourful butterfly floating over a beige cornfield, like how the flute and trumpet float over the arrangement. The moment Will came in and improvised trumpet over this I knew we had a beautiful, melancholic track that felt like the most important on the album to me.”

The record’s improvisational core gives it life. It breathes like a live set, full of space and subtle shifts. Whether soundtracking a contemplative walk or a low-lit evening indoors, Cicero Nights resonates with rare emotional clarity.

Weir’s past in post-punk and synth-rock melts into a matured, reflective palette. Instead of synths or overproduction, Cicero Nights leans into organic instrumentation and live chemistry. Drummer Patch Romanowski provides earthy, swinging rhythms, while collaborators like Will Miller (Resavoir) enrich the horn sections with soulful and impressionistic nuance. Tracks like ‘Half & Half’ and ‘On The Court’ evoke Curtis Mayfield’s urban tenderness and the hushed drama of Italian soundtrack maestros.

Released through Root Records, the album will land on 19th September. For now, though, wrap your ears around ‘Mariposa’.
