Treat your taste buds to these mouthwatering leftovers!
We’re back with five new releases packaged into easily digestible snippets in our โLeftoversโ feature. This week, site faves Emma-Jean Thackray and Yazz Ahmed are back to spread their musical magic. Meanwhile, The Pro-Teens are putting their MF DOOM fandom on full display. We also have the pleasure of getting acquainted with Zola Marcelle while dusting off a 27-year-old gem from UK jazz legend Jessica Lauren’s collection. If youโre digging the tunes, support the artist by purchasing their music. Enjoy.
Emma-Jean Thackray is finally back with new music, and it’s been a long time coming! Three years after unveiling her spectacular debut album Yellow, the multi-talented Thackray has revealed Black Hole featuring Reggie Watts. Utterly transfixing, the track is laden with hefty drums, wah bass, funky guitars, and spacey synths. The driving production and the vocals of Thackray and Watts come together seamlessly, creating a striking and impactful song. We’re on the edge of our seats for what EJT has up her sleeve next, and if it’s anything like this, it’s sure to be memorable!
It’s been over five years since we last had an album from Yazz Ahmed. The ‘High priestess of psychedelic Arabic jazz‘ breaks the silence with A Paradise In The Hold, the title track from her upcoming fourth album. Throughout the track’s ten-minute adventure, Ahmed enchants with her captivating and heartwarming trumpet, joined by George Crowley on bass clarinet, Naadia Sheriff playing the Fender Rhodes, and Corrina Silvester on darbuka. An enchanting return from an artist we’ve been longing forโa must-hear!
Enigmatic Melbourne instrumental group The Pro-Teens pay tribute to MF DOOM on MF TEEN: Your Concurrence In The Above Is Assumed, reimagining 14 iconic cuts through a cinematic soul lens.
I’m late with getting to know Zola Marcelle. The London-based bassist and vocalist has graced the world with her music since 2018, and we’ve joyfully dived into her back catalogue over the past few days. Her latest single, “Bloodline”, is an absolute must-listen!
Ah, the adage “Old is gold“ โ a simple statement that celebrates the timeless value found in things from the past. That’s certainly the case with FILM‘ by the legendary keyboard player and composer Jessica Lauren. Originally recorded in 1997 and released on CD in 1999, this 27-year-old album feels fresh and like it was made just yesterday. Buried beneath layers of nostalgia, the album resurfaces with a vibrancy and energy that defies the passage of time, inviting new listeners to experience its magic anew.
